Lesson
Plan:
Piano Lesson/Composition
Objectives:
1. Practice with a productive sequence of warm-up exercises-small
piece-section of piece transitions) -integrate piece.
2. Play piece or section of piece slowly and gradually increase tempo.
3. Know what 'the beat' is and its division (quarter & eighth
notes). Compose short rhythmic exercise and clap or play on a percussion
instrument.
Sequence:
1. Piano: Go through piano piece worked on previous week, evaluate
and correct. Continue with a new piece if previous piece is at a good
level; if not, continue with old piece.
2. Learn words such 'slurs,' 'transitions,' and 'tempo' and explain
how they fit with pieces being worked on.
3. Composition/Theory: Introduce concept of 'beat' and tempo. Division
is like dividing pie or pizza.
4. Introduce concept of 'rhythmic patterns' and 'repeat' sign.
5. Clap rhythms that I write on board; then have students write a
rhythmic pattern.
6. Play rhythmic patterns and have each student identify each of the
patterns.
7. Have each student write a rhythmic pattern and then clap two patterns
at the same time. Then have students write more rhythms to play on
percussion instruments.
8. Echoing: establish a steady beat; then have students echo rhythmic
patterns set by teacher or student. Echo patterns on instruments.
9. Writing down rhythms: establish a steady beat; then tap rhythm
a few times and have students write the rhythm down. Check answers
to make sure they written accurately.
